📜 Historical Information about Vienna

Vienna’s history spans over 2000 years – from Celtic settlement to Roman Vindobona camp (15 BC) guarding Danube frontier, to capital of mighty Habsburg Empire for 640 years. Founded as medieval market town around 1000 AD, Vienna became residence of Babenbergs then Habsburgs from 1278. Under Habsburgs it rose as Holy Roman Empire capital, repelling two Ottoman sieges (1529, 1683). The 1683 victory opened Baroque golden age – Schönbrunn, Belvedere, Karlskirche, Hofburg expansion – making Vienna Europe’s music capital with Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Strauss.

19th century: After Napoleonic wars, Congress of Vienna 1814-15 redrew Europe. Emperor Franz Joseph (1848-1916) demolished walls to create Ringstrasse boulevard 1858 – opera, museums, parliament, Rathaus – still world’s most beautiful boulevard. Population boomed to 2.3 million by 1910 – 4th largest city in Europe.

20th century brought collapse: WWI ended Habsburg monarchy 1918, Red Vienna socialist housing 1920s, Anschluss to Nazi Germany 1938, heavy bombing WWII, 10-year Allied occupation till 1955 State Treaty. Post-war Vienna became neutral Cold War bridge, UN city (UNO City 1979). Historic Centre inscribed UNESCO World Heritage 2001 for its intact Baroque and Gründerzeit fabric.
