2. St. Stephen’s Basilica
Biggest church in Budapest – Can hold 8500 people. 96m high – same as Parliament. Climb 364 steps to dome for 360-degree city view. See mummified hand of King Stephen.
- Entry: Donation based 2000 HUF, Dome 3000 HUF
- Allow: 1 hour
3. Széchenyi Chain Bridge
First bridge to connect Buda & Pest in 1849. Guarded by stone lions. Best walk at night when lit. This is where your famous Danube Water Bus video is shot.
- Best Experience: Walk from Clark Adam Square to Széchenyi Square at sunset.
4. Shoes on the Danube Bank
60 pairs of iron shoes – Memorial for Jews shot into Danube in WW2. Very emotional. Located just south of Parliament.
- Free, 10 mins. Go early morning to avoid crowds.
B. BUDA SIDE – Castle Hill & Gellert Hill
5. Buda Castle & Royal Palace
700-year-old palace of Hungarian kings. Now houses Hungarian National Gallery & Budapest History Museum. Take Funicular (Budavári Sikló) up – 3000 HUF.
- Free to walk around. Allow 2 hours.
6. Fisherman’s Bastion
Fairytale 7 towers for 7 Magyar tribes. Best viewpoint of Parliament and Pest. Looks like Disney castle. Sunrise is empty and magical.
- Ticket: Upper terrace 4000 HUF (8 AM – 8 PM), Lower free always.
7. Matthias Church
700-year-old church with colorful Zsolnay tiles roof. Where kings were crowned. Inside is breathtaking with frescoes.
- Ticket: 3000 HUF
8. Gellért Hill & Citadella – Best Sunset Point
135m hill with Liberty Statue on top. Best FREE panoramic view of whole Budapest. 20 min hike up. Citadel is under renovation in 2026 but viewpoint is open.
- Best Time: Sunset
9. Hospital in the Rock
Secret WW2 hospital & nuclear bunker under Castle Hill. 6 km tunnel. Guided tour only – Very unique.

10. Széchenyi Thermal Bath – Most Famous
Europe’s largest medicinal bath. 18 pools – Outdoor pools are iconic in winter with steam, people playing chess. Yellow Neo-Baroque building.

- Timing: 7 AM – 8 PM
- Tip: Go 7 AM morning to avoid crowd.
11. Gellért Bath – Most Beautiful
Art Nouveau masterpiece – Stained glass, mosaic tiles. More for relaxing than party. Indoor pools.

12. Rudas Bath – Turkish 16th Century
Built by Ottomans in 1550! Original Turkish bath with octagonal pool under dome. Night bathing Friday/Saturday 10 PM – 4 AM with party lights.
13. Szechenyi? No – Lukács & Kiraly – Locals Favorite
Cheaper, less touristy. Where locals go.
D. CULTURE, HISTORY & JEWISH QUARTER
14. Dohány Street Synagogue – World’s 2nd Largest
Largest synagogue in Europe, 2nd in world. Seats 3000 people. Complex includes Jewish Museum, Holocaust Memorial, Raoul Wallenberg Garden.

15. Jewish Quarter & Ruin Bars – Nightlife Capital
WW2 ghetto turned into party district. Ruin bars are pubs built in abandoned buildings.
Szimpla Kert – First and most famous ruin bar. Sunday Farmers Market in daytime. Must visit even if you don’t drink – It’s like art museum with eclectic furniture.
Instant-Fogas, ÉK, Csendes – Other famous ruin bars.
16. House of Terror
Museum in former secret police building – Shows Nazi and Soviet occupation of Hungary. Very moving.

Andrássy is UNESCO boulevard like Champs-Élysées. Opera House – 3rd best acoustics in Europe after Milan & Paris. Tour 8000 HUF includes mini concert.

Built 1894 – Gold, marble, frescoes. Called most beautiful café in world. Price high – Cappuccino 4000 HUF but worth for 30 mins experience.

19. Heroes’ Square, City Park & Vajdahunyad Castle
Heroes’ Square – 7 chieftains of Magyars + statues of kings. Behind it City Park with lake – In winter becomes Europe’s largest ice rink. Vajdahunyad Castle – Fairytale castle with all Hungarian architectural styles.

20. Central Market Hall (Great Market Hall)
Biggest indoor market – 1897 building. Ground floor paprika, sausages, Tokaji wine. First floor souvenirs, lace. Second floor food stalls – Eat Lángos (Hungarian fried flatbread).

21. Margaret Island & Margaret Bridge
2.5 km long island in middle of Danube – No cars allowed! Rent Bringó cart, Musical Fountain show, Japanese Garden, Palatinus Water Park in summer. Margaret Bridge is your most scenic tram ride – Tram 4-6.

22. Danube River Cruise & Water Bus D11/D12
Don’t pay 50 Euro for private cruise! Take Public Water Bus D11/D12 – Same route as tourist boat for 750 HUF with 24hr travel card. Sunset cruise from Jászai Mari tér to Boráros tér – 75 mins – See Parliament, Buda Castle, Gellért Hill lit up.

Currency: Hungarian Forint (HUF) – NOT Euro! 1 Euro = ∼390 HUF. Always pay in HUF, not Euro – Shops give bad Euro rate. Cards accepted everywhere.
