Hualien’s history blends Amis indigenous heritage, Qing settlement and Japanese development. Originally called Sakiraya by Amis and Sakur by Japanese pronunciation, the area was sparsely inhabited by Amis and Taroko Truku tribes until 1851 when Han Chinese farmers from Yilan arrived. In 1909 Japanese colonial government renamed it Karenko and built the Hualien-Taitung railway, sugar factory and port to exploit marble and timber – Taroko marble became Japan’s building material. After 1945 ROC took over, KMT veterans settled, marble industry boomed – Hualien supplied 90% of Taiwan’s marble. 1951 major earthquake destroyed city, rebuilt as grid town. 1986 Taroko National Park established protecting 92,000 hectares. Indigenous culture preserved – Hualien has highest indigenous population 27% in Taiwan. 2024 magnitude 7.2 earthquake damaged Taroko trails, now under restoration until 2026.
