International travel shouldn’t start with a sore back. The best travelers we know have one secret in common: they never check a bag if they can avoid it.
Packing light isn’t about sacrificing style. It’s about freedom — no lost luggage, no waiting at the carousel, no overweight fees, and the ability to hop on a train or climb cobblestone streets without dragging a 25kg suitcase.
Here’s how to do a 7-10 day international trip with just a carry-on.
1. The 5-4-3-2-1 Rule (Your New Packing Formula)
Stop counting days. Use this formula instead. For a 7-10 day trip:
5 Tops, 4 Bottoms, 3 Pairs of Shoes, 2 Layers, 1 of Each Extra
- 5 Tops: 3 casual tees/shirts + 2 dressier tops that mix and match
- 4 Bottoms: 2 pants/jeans + 1 shorts/skirt + 1 you’re wearing on the plane
- 3 Shoes: 1 walking shoes (worn), 1 casual sneakers/loafers, 1 dressy sandal/flats
- 2 Layers: 1 light jacket + 1 sweater/hoodie
- 1 of Each: 1 swimsuit, 1 hat, 1 set of sleepwear
Every top should match at least 3 bottoms. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t go.
2. Pick a Color Palette
The #1 mistake that causes overpacking is packing random clothes. Professional packers choose 2 neutrals + 1 accent.
Example: Black + White + Denim + Olive as accent. Or Navy + Beige + White + Rust.
Suddenly, everything goes with everything. 10 pieces = 20+ outfits.
3. The 3 Folding Tricks That Save 50% Space
1. Rolling, Not Folding: Roll soft items like t-shirts, jeans, and knitwear. It prevents wrinkles and saves space.
2. Bundling: For dress shirts and pants, wrap them around a central core (like a toiletry bag) to avoid creases.
3. Packing Cubes: This is non-negotiable. Use 3 cubes:
- Cube 1: Tops
- Cube 2: Bottoms
- Cube 3: Underwear & socks
You’ll fit a week’s clothes in half a carry-on.
4. Wear Your Heaviest Items on the Plane
This is the oldest frequent-flyer trick in the book.
Boarding day outfit:
- Your heaviest shoes / boots
- Jeans (not shorts)
- Bulkiest jacket or sweater
- Pack your hat in your personal item
You just saved 2-3 kg of carry-on weight without packing less.
5. Go Solid on Toiletries
This is how you beat the liquid limit and pack lighter.
- Solid shampoo & conditioner bar (lasts 2 months, zero leaks)
- Solid deodorant, solid perfume
- Toothpaste tablets instead of a tube
- Small reusable silicone bottles (only 3-4 for essentials)
You’ll clear security in seconds and free up half your toiletry bag.
6. The International Tech & Document Pouch
Keep this in your personal item, never in your checked bag:
- Passport + 2 printed copies + digital copy on phone
- Universal travel adapter with USB-C ports
- 20,000mAh power bank + 2 cables
- Earbuds + pen
- Prescription meds in original bottles
- A small crossbody anti-theft bag for daily use when you land
7. The “What If” Test Before You Zip
Lay everything on your bed. Now ask 3 questions for each item:
- Can I wear this at least 3 different ways?
- Will I wear this if the weather changes?
- What happens if I DON’T pack this? Can I buy it there for under $20?
If you hesitate, remove it. You can buy almost anything abroad.
Glimpse Trip Rule: If you’re not sure, leave it out. You’ll never wish you packed heavier on a cobblestone street in Lisbon or when running for a connection in Istanbul.
What NOT to Pack (Leave These Behind)
- “Just in case” clothes: You won’t need 3 pairs of jeans “just in case”
- Full-size towels: Use a quick-dry microfiber towel
- Too many books: Use Kindle / phone
- Jeans for every day: 2 pairs max. They are heavy and slow to dry.
- Bulky hair tools: Most hotels have a hairdryer. Embrace natural hair for a week.
The Final Checklist: 7kg Carry-On for 10 Days
In Your Carry-On (Rolling Bag):
- 3 packing cubes with 5-4-3-2-1 wardrobe
- 1 toiletry cube (solids + mini liquids)
- 1 pair extra shoes in dust bag
In Your Personal Item (Backpack/Tote):
- Tech pouch + documents + medications
- 1 change of clothes + toothbrush
- Water bottle + snack
Total weight: Under 7-8kg. Total freedom: Unlimited.
Packing light is a skill, and like any skill, it gets better every trip.
