Zhangjiajie history dates back to Neolithic 100,000 years ago with Tujia and Miao ethnic settlements. During Qin Dynasty 221 BC it was part of Qianzhong County. Tang Dynasty 618 AD it became Cili County famous for cinnabar mining. Ming Dynasty 1368-1644 saw Tusi chieftain system of Tujia people ruling the mountains.
